Why has my old lead flashing failed?
Old flashings often crack where the bays were made too long, or the pointing holding them into the wall has crumbled. We renew the lead and re-point the chase so it stays put.
Do you paint the new lead?
We finish new lead with patination oil, which stops the white staining that fresh lead can leave running down tiles and render.
Can you repair just the flashing rather than the whole roof?
Often yes. If the tiles are sound and only the lead has failed, we renew the flashing on its own. If the leak has been running for a while we check the timbers underneath before we sign it off.
How long does lead flashing last?
Lead is one of the longest lasting roofing materials, and correctly sized and dressed leadwork can last for decades. Most failures come from lead made in bays that were too long, or from pointing that has crumbled, both of which we put right.
